Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese is set to helm What Happens at Night, a chilling adaptation of Peter Cameron’s acclaimed ghost story novel, with longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead. Joining DiCaprio is fellow Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence, marking her first time working under Scorsese’s direction.
The film, backed by Apple Original Films and Studiocanal, is slated to begin production in January 2026. Patrick Marber, known for Closer and The Critic, has penned the screenplay.
A Frozen World of Mystery
Set in a remote, snowbound European town, What Happens at Night follows an American couple who arrive to adopt a child. They check into the eerie Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel—a cavernous, nearly deserted space populated by enigmatic characters including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic faith healer. As the couple’s journey unfolds, reality begins to blur, and they’re forced to confront unsettling truths about their marriage, their identities, and the life they’ve built together.
Scorsese & DiCaprio: A Legendary Duo
This marks the seventh collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio, whose cinematic partnership spans over two decades with hits like The Aviator, The Departed, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Their latest venture draws comparisons to Shutter Island, another psychological thriller that blurred the lines between reality and illusion.
Jennifer Lawrence Joins the Fold
Lawrence, fresh off her Cannes-acclaimed performance in Die, My Love, brings fresh energy to the project. While Scorsese produced Die, My Love, What Happens at Night will be their first director-actor collaboration.
Oscar Watch Begins with three Oscar winners leading the charge, What Happens at Night is already generating buzz as one of Hollywood’s most anticipated films. As casting for supporting roles begins and production gears up, fans can expect a haunting, high-art thriller that blends psychological depth with Scorsese’s signature storytelling.
